Stakeout a work means starting to take the drawings from the plane to reality, but what on paper seems easy, in the work may not be so. To rethink we will have to take into account various factors, anticipate the problems that will arise when we work.

Phases of a stakeout

The process of stakeout of any element can be divided into three phases.

Stakeout comprehension phase

This is the moment that requires more capacity for concentration, logical reasoning during this phase we will have to internalize what we are required to implement the plan.

We have to look carefully at the dimensions that mark us, the measurements, the height.

We have to imagine how we are going to start building the element that we want to rethink.

Check phase

Once we have clear the dimensions, heights, levels that we have to respect. We must verify that what the plane tells us is fulfilled in reality.

It is very common that one thing does not coincide with the other and that means, having to make initial project corrections. This phase is important and if we do not take it into account it can give us a lot of headaches later.

Marking and stakeout phase

Finally, once the checks have been made, it is necessary to start with the marking. The last thing that would be left is to start marking the lines of stake out.


Repositioning minutes

The stakeout is a document that is generated once the marking of the stakeout of the work is carried out. It is a document that serves to record the person who performs the implementation and the person who supervises it are in agreement with the result.

The act of stakeout is also a guarantee for both parties. For example if there was a previous error in the work in this document would be recorded.

Skills to know how to stakeout a work

In order to stakeout the work, whatever the element, we will have to develop certain skills either by learning theory or by practicing with a professional who has experience.

What do I have to learn?

Reading of plans: The first step is to internalize well the theoretical measurements of the work or the element to be implanted.

Anticipation: Sometimes the plans do not conform to reality and it is in the phase of redefinition in which to anticipate the error, it will save us the dislikes of a bad execution. To anticipate it is necessary to check that the drawings of the plans are correct and executable as they have been designed.

Resolution: To have resolute character, since the same problem can have different solutions and among them you have to know how to choose the most optimal for the occasion. For example, to rethink a finish the aesthetic criteria are more important than to rethink a structural element that is not seen.

General concepts in work setting out

When we are some element of the work whether they are partitions, pillars, we are always going to have to help lines, points or axes, these “marks” tend to be common in all cases.

Names and definitions of lines and stake out points:

Dimensions: Dimensions are points that mark the height of the elements on the ground. Normally this point is given by topographers or surveyors with specific devices (Total stations …). There are different types of dimensions:

Base level: The base level is the point that is marked on the ground and for our work will be ± 0.00. From this point we will mark the heights of floors, roofs etc …

Relative dimensions: The relative dimensions will be marked in the project plans and will be based on the base level, if the relative dimensions are above the base they will have a positive sign (+), such as forged ones, and if they are negative (-) , means that the elements will be below, such as parking.

Level: The level is a horizontal axis, on which we are going to reference to take the heights of the elements. The level in turn can be a specific measure with respect to a level or not.

Plumbs: The plumb lines are vertical axes that we can mark on walls or walls in case we need to reference them vertically.

Brackets: The square is the 90º angle, colloquially in the construction it receives that name. It is an important angle because we are going to find it on many occasions.
